The Space Between is a short wildlife documentary produced for the University of Bristol Wildlife Film Society’s annual short film competition.

Set in Eastville Park, Bristol, the film explores the importance of urban green spaces through the eyes of birdwatchers, photographers, and everyday visitors. Blending intimate wildlife cinematography with natural conversations and unscripted moments, the film captures how people of all ages connect with nature in the middle of the city.

Through encounters with kingfishers, herons, cormorants, and other urban wildlife, The Space Between reveals how slowing down and learning to notice the natural world can foster curiosity, community, and a sense of calm. Rather than following a traditional narrated structure, the film is driven by the voices and experiences of those who regularly visit the park, creating a shared, human perspective on nature in urban environments.

The film premiered at the University of Bristol Wildlife Filmmaking Society competition, where it was awarded Best Overall Film, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography.

As Director, Producer, Editor, and Camera Operator, I led the creative and technical development of the film from concept to final delivery. My role focused on shaping an observational, human-led narrative that moved away from traditional blue-chip wildlife storytelling.

My responsibilities included:

  • Concept development and story direction, shaping the film around themes of observation, coexistence, and urban nature

  • Leading the production, coordinating filming schedules, team roles, and on-location shooting

  • Conducting and guiding interviews to capture natural, conversational storytelling

  • Wildlife and observational cinematography, including key behavioural sequences (kingfisher, heron, cormorant)

  • Leading the edit, structuring interview-led storytelling into a cohesive five-act narrative

  • Refining pacing and tone to prioritise discovery, authenticity, and emotional connection

  • Colour grading for a consistent winter atmosphere and cinematic feel

The Space Between Team at the University of Bristol Wildlife Filmmaking Society premiere, 2026.

While I led the project as Director and Editor, The Space Between was a collaborative effort created with a team of filmmakers from the University of Bristol Wildlife Film Society. I am incredibly grateful for their creativity, support, and contributions across cinematography, editing, and production.
